Because my role here at Youth With a Mission is pretty diverse, I’ll be sharing about it in pieces, starting with the school I’m working with right now.
The School of Worship is a three month school that we run once a year. During the school I work with a band (essentially a co-ed small group) of 5 or so students. Our current school has eleven students, with five students in my band and six in the other.
Each week, speakers from all over come to speak on various topics such as prayer in worship, and the temple of David. As well, each of the students will be writing their own music and teaching it to their band to develop it further. Near the end of the school each student will choose one of their own songs to record, and the songs will be compiled into a final project for the school.
As a leader, I generally don’t play music with the students; rather my role is to coach them as they learn to play as band. This last week my students just finished writing their first songs, and we are in the process of developing them to play as a band. At the end of this week we will be presenting them to the School, as well as hearing what the other band has been writing.
The overall goal of this school is to help the students foster a lifestyle of worship. Practically, this can include everything from developing healthy band dynamics to learning to communicate God’s heart through their writing. And, while this school is certainly not an easy one, I’ve never seen God fail to work in and through the students in amazing ways.
As we get further along in the school, I’ll be more involved with the recording and production process. I’ll be sure to share a bit more about that as it get’s closer. If you’re interested in more information don’t hesitate to ask, and be sure to follow the link above to learn more about the School of Worship.
My New Small Group
This time of the year, I work with the School of Worship. Instead of just having a guys small group, I have a band that I lead, along with my friend Jenna (Front-Right). They’re a great group, and I’m looking forward to mentoring and getting to know all of them!
New Updates
In order to update people more consistently on what it is that I actually do here in Colorado, I’ll be restructuring my blog a bit. So far I’ve done an alright job sharing some of my creative projects, but not as well with my time at Youth With a Mission. My plan, as such, is to start using tags on my posts; Simply put, got to http://kevinlooper.com/tagged/updates to read just the posts about ministry and life here at YWAM.
And this one is called “Butterfly”
Lyrics:
One house, two kids, and three days in the yellow sun One game that two kids played forever just for fun
Green grass meets tall trees, in a world filled with things to see Think of something you could be, Something small and strange and free
If you were A butterfly with 300 eyes, To look at light like you’ve never seen the night Don’t fight to fly, don’t apologize, Drift as high as you can just to watch the sunrise
You be the hill, I’ll be the tree You’re the ocean and I’m the sea With lots of waves, one cloud, And a light house by the beach
On the count of three, close your eyes Feel the sun and the warm breeze The soft sand, a quiet roar And a million birds at least
If you were A butterfly with 300 eyes, To look at light like you’ve never seen the night Don’t fight to fly, don’t apologize, Drift as high as you can just to watch the sunrise
I know it’s hard I know it’s dark there’s so much left to overcome But if you could be anything Much free’r than us
If you were A butterfly with 300 eyes, To look at light like you’ve never seen the night Don’t fight to fly, don’t apologize, Drift as high as you can just to watch the sunrise
My friend Jenna and I opened a house show of a friend of ours. This one is called “The Officer”
Lyrics:
Drifting for miles on these cold open seas All that was loved worn by years in between Long nights lay barren with lost empty dreams Drifting for miles on these cold open seas
Haunted by sirens, so softly they sing Words that bring broken men down to their knees Memories of hope crash like waves on the reef Haunted by sirens, so softly they sing
The smell of salt air Makes your lungs burn Open water, empty skies All hands steady till the tides turn Sail at daybreak Live or die
All once children till beckoned the deep, “Come let me hold you, and sway you to sleep”
The smell of salt air Makes your lungs burn Open water, empty skies All hands steady till the tides turn Sail at daybreak Live or die
All once children till beckoned the deep, “Come let me hold you, and sway you to sleep”
My friend Dagan (currently in the School of Worship) and I were playing through some songs in the office.
My dad and I headed over to the Walker Art Museum to look at the new “Lifelike” exhibit. This was one of my favorites.
I met Joel at a Guitar Center in Minnesota, and after talking for a bit we played through something quickly. (I’m playing a nice Martin and Joel is playing a Taylor.)
